Trees behind the site were planted in 2015 to help monitor the area for the presence of Asian longhorned beetle. Shantung maple (Acer truncatum) and a few Painted maple (Acer pictum subsp. mono) were chosen because they can lure beetles occurring in close proximity. As of 2019, Asian longhorned beetle was not yet known to occur in Delaware, but future infestations might be detected earlier by watching these maples for signs of attack. Asian longhorned beetle is a serious threat to a variety of deciduous hardwoods in North America, and signs of attack include frass, egg deposition site, oozing sap, and exit holes.
