Believed to be one of the mileposts erected by Elijah Bates from Springfield Court House to Chester Factories, this stone stood at 80 Main Street for about 150 years. Bates, a lawyer and principal owner of the Eighth Mass. Turnpike, built from 1800 to 1805 to connect Westfield with Pittsfield, also opened Bates Road for access to the turnpike terminus at the Russell line.
