The Highlands is a historic mansion and garden estate near Fort Washington in Whitemarsh Township, north of Philadelphia. Built between 1794 and 1796 for merchant and politician Anthony Morris and designed by Timothy Matlack, its late Georgian fieldstone house reflects Morris’s prominence in Pennsylvania public and financial life. After Morris sold the estate, it passed through the Hittner, Sheaff, Sinkler, and Roosevelt families, while its acreage gradually changed over time. Donated to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1957 and transferred to Whitemarsh Township in 2021, it survives as a preserved country estate, museum, and community site known for its formal gardens and longstanding public events.
