Mitchell Cemetery Stone #3
History
4
David Mitchell, regarded in this account as the head of a line of Mitchells in America, was born in 1681, probably near Dromore in County Down, northeastern Ireland, settled in southwestern Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in Drumore Township about 1713, and was buried in the Morrison Graveyard near Chestnut Level, Pennsylvania. His tablet, found with other Mitchell graves and brought away in 1928 because the graveyard was being rapidly obliterated, is linked here to Lancaster County records showing that his will and other legal papers were duly proven on Nov. 21, 1757. The children named in that will were Samuel, Jean, Abraham, Margaret, Heleanor, Sarah, George, and David. Samuel and his wife are buried under this monument. The tablet text records: In memory of Jean Mitchell who dep,d this life August the 2 1746 aged 40 years and David Mitchell who dep.d this life November the 7, 1757 aged 76 years.
