Founded in 1958 in Exeter, Rhode Island, by anthropologist Eva Butler and Narragansett and Pokanoket educator Princess Red Wing, the Tomaquag Indian Memorial Museum is one of the oldest tribal museums in the United States. It preserves and presents the history and living cultures of Native peoples in southeastern New England, with collections on the Narragansett, Niantic, Pokanoket, Wompanoag, and Nipmuck. Its exhibits include traditional crafts, archival materials dating to the 1880s, and tributes to important Indigenous figures. The grounds add outdoor cultural features, and the site later housed the Nuweetooun School. Nationally recognized in 2016, the museum is relocating to the University of Rhode Island.
