Plymouth Light, also called Gurnet Light, stands on Gurnet Point at the entrance to Plymouth Bay in Massachusetts, within the earthworks of Fort Andrew, a site used in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. First built in 1768, it was rebuilt in 1801 and 1842, with paired lights replacing the original single light. Its importance revived after the Cape Cod Canal opened in 1914, when one tower was removed and the remaining tower was upgraded. Staffed by America’s first female lighthouse keeper, it is especially significant as the oldest wooden lighthouse in the United States.
