Duxbury Beach is a six-mile barrier beach between Duxbury Bay and the Atlantic that also provides the only land access to Saquish and Gurnet Point. Its modern development was shaped by George and Georgianna Wright, who bought most of it in 1885, built cottages, and established the bridge connection from Duxbury in 1892. Ownership later passed from the Wright estate to the Duxbury Beach Association and then to Duxbury Beach Reservation, Inc., while the town came to manage permits, policing, and conservation patrols. The beach also reflects military and communications history, storm exposure, and important coastal habitat, including protected piping plover nesting areas.
