In January 1909, the Beaumont Woman's Club voted to work for the establishment of a library, and on March 11, 1909, it appointed a five-member committee to investigate opening a reading room. In November 1909, the club raised $71.00 and collected 81 books through a Tag Day and an evening book party where guests dressed as characters from well known books. On August 12, 1911, Beaumont Township became a library district by a two-to-one vote of 59 to 27, and the first library trustee meeting was held on August 30, 1911. The Beaumont Library District opened informally on October 1, 1911, in two ground-floor rooms of the Beaumont Bank building at 5th and Egan, where the Bank of Beaumont hosted it until a permanent site was completed. On May 6, 1913, the library trustees accepted Andrew Carnegie's gift of $10,000 for a library building, while the community agreed to provide the site, cover operating costs, and open the library to the community. On September 5, 1913, voters chose the southeast corner of 8th and California as the location, construction began with the laying of the cornerstone on February 12, 1914, and the new Carnegie library building opened on June 16, 1914. By 1928, the reading room had been thoroughly renovated and the grounds improved, and the library was known as one of the best equipped in the county. A Federal Works Progress Administration mural was added in 1934, an addition housing the information desk, offices, and adult collections was built at the back in 1966, and a new roof façade was designed and erected in 1978 to solve water drainage problems. In 1981, the Friends of the Library was organized to raise financial aid through book sales and other activities, purchased a computer as well as a TV and VCR for the children's section, and the Heritage Room was added with a gift from the Laura May Stewart Fund. The Board of Trustees appointed the district's first professional librarian in 1990, the first electronic catalog became available to the public in 1992, and in 2008 an elevator was added to meet ADA requirements, the second floor was restored, and the 1978 roof façade was removed so the original parapet roofline could be restored. First self-check machines were installed in 2009, new drought tolerant landscaping was installed in 2010, and on August 12, 2011, the Beaumont Library District celebrated 100 years of service.
