San Bernardino National Forest spans a vast swath of Southern California mountains, from the San Bernardino and eastern San Gabriel ranges to the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa Mountains, with elevations from about 2,000 to 11,499 feet. Its varied terrain supports climates and vegetation ranging from oak woodlands to conifer forests, including extensive old growth. The forest includes seven wilderness areas, Southern California’s two tallest waterfalls, and Lost Lake along the San Andreas Fault. It also contains places of long human significance, part of the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail, research land, mountain communities, and notable recreation areas, while wildfire management remains a constant presence.
