Seagrave Memorial Observatory in North Scituate, Rhode Island, is an astronomical observatory named for astronomer Frank Evens Seagrave and operated by Skyscrapers, Inc. Its defining feature is a historic 8¼-inch Alvan Clark refracting telescope, originally intended for Seagrave’s 16th birthday in 1876 but not delivered until 1878 because of its long construction. First located with Seagrave’s private observatory at 119 Benefit Street in Providence, the telescope was then the third largest in New England. In October 1914, the current building in North Scituate was completed and the telescope moved there. Since 1936, Skyscrapers, Inc. has owned the observatory, preserving its long continuity with Seagrave’s life and work.
