Jared Sidney Torrance, known as Sidney to his many friends, was a Southern California corporate and civic leader and the founder of the city of Torrance. At the age of 59, he purchased Rancho Dominguez grazing lands and created a city in which industry, commerce and residential interests would live together in harmony.
