The Wheeler–Kohn House is a rare survivor of the stately mansions built on Chicago's Near South Side before the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, and it ranks among the city's best examples of Second Empire architecture. Banker Calvin Wheeler built it, and clothier Joseph Kohn remodeled it in the mid-1880s, adding the window bay and elaborate front porch to compete with the newer mansions on nearby Prairie Avenue.
