Childress County was formed from Young and Bexar Territories, created on August 21, 1876, and organized on April 11, 1887. It was named in honor of George Campbell Childress, 1804–1841, a member of the Convention in 1836 and co-author of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Childress is the county seat.
