Colonel Thomas Baker, a civil engineer, lawyer, farmer, and soldier who lived from 1810 to 1872, came to this location in 1863. A friend to all travelers, he established a settlement that became known as Baker’s Field. This civic center was his dream come true. His motto was, “Time will justify a man who means to do right.”
