Camp McDonald was established here in 1862 and occupied by the 11th W. Va. Inf., U.S.V. On May 6, 1862, Federal forces under Maj. George C. Trimble repelled an attack by the Confederate Moccasin Rangers under Capt. Geo. Downs.
