West Peak, a 1,024-foot mountain in the Hanging Hills above Meriden, is the highest traprock peak in Connecticut and rises about 700 feet above the city. Known for its steep cliffs, wide views, and exposed ledges, it serves as both a scenic summit and a natural lookout, with vistas stretching across southern Connecticut to Long Island Sound. The peak is part of the traprock ridge system along an ancient fault line and lies on an important raptor migration route, drawing bird watchers and hikers. It also holds a notable place in communications history: in 1939 Edwin Howard Armstrong used the summit for one of the first FM radio broadcasts, and broadcast stations still operate there today.
