East Peak is a nine hundred seventy-six-foot basalt traprock mountain in Meriden’s Hanging Hills, rising about six hundred feet above the city with steep cliffs and wide views reaching across southern Connecticut to Long Island Sound. Its summit is crowned by Castle Craig, a stone observation tower that serves as its best-known landmark. Set within the one thousand eight hundred-acre Hubbard Park, the peak is crossed by the fifty-one-mile Metacomet Trail and is accessible by both hiking routes and a seasonal auto road. Its importance lies in the striking combination of geology, scenery, recreation, and easy public access that makes it a defining local landmark.
