After learning of Tacoma’s 1885 expulsion of its Chinese residents, Dr. David and Mrs. Signy Murdoch worked with city and state officials and community activists beginning in 1982 to start a process of reconciliation aimed at healing the city from what was called a most reprehensible occurrence. Their collaborative efforts developed into the Chinese Reconciliation Project Foundation, founded as a non-profit corporation in 1994 and dedicated to promoting peace, harmony, and understanding in Tacoma’s multicultural community while preserving the historical memory of the tragic expulsion and supporting healing. In a May 16, 1997 reflection, Governor Gary Locke said that much more is known about those who drove the Chinese out of Tacoma than about the Chinese themselves, that one can only imagine what the 200 Chinese people felt as they boarded the train and what 500 other Chinese residents felt as they fled the city, and that imagining their pain, fear, and anguish is an important step on the road to reconciliation.
