Georgetown Light stands on North Island at the entrance to Winyah Bay southeast of Georgetown, South Carolina, guiding traffic from the coast into the bay as an active aid to navigation maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard. Also part of the Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center Heritage Preserve and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it has evolved through repeated rebuilding and improvement. An earlier cypress tower was destroyed in 1806, a 72-foot brick tower rose in 1812, a fourth-order Fresnel lens was installed in 1857, and after Civil War damage the tower was rebuilt in 1867 and raised to 87 feet. Automated in 1986, it remains both a working lighthouse and a historic coastal landmark.
