The Neville archaeological site on the Merrimack River in Manchester, New Hampshire, preserves repeated Native use during the Middle Archaic, beginning about 8000 years before present. It is especially significant for the Neville Complex and its distinctive Neville stemmed points, made about 7800 to 7000 BP and found from Maine to New York, suggesting ties between northeastern groups and older southeastern cultures. Evidence indicates the riverside location served mainly as a seasonal spring fishing and domestic camp. Excavations begun in 1967 revealed unusually deep deposits, and Dena Dincauze’s completed study established Neville as a key site for understanding prehistoric settlement, subsistence, and cultural connections in New England.
