With double-thick walls, metal doors, and a small eleven-foot-by-eleven-foot size, this jail probably served as an effective crime deterrent in the rough mining town. It originally stood about one block east of this location. After Silver Reef was abandoned, the Stirling Family moved the sturdy structure about two miles to the town of Leeds, where they used it as an ice house. Later it was moved to various locations in Washington City and used to store grain and farming supplies. The jail was returned to Silver Reef in 2017.
