Nayatt Point Light in Barrington, Rhode Island, was established to guide vessels through the narrow passage between Nayatt Point and a shoal off Conimicut Point. Congress funded the first station in 1828, but the initial tower, built by low bidders William Halloway and Westgate Watson under a system overseen through the U.S. Treasury Department, was poorly constructed and hard for keepers to use. The present brick lighthouse was completed in 1856 and incorporates a keeper’s house from 1828. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988, it remains a notable Rhode Island aid to navigation with links to both its original station and later rebuilding.
