Conimicut Light is associated with Rhode Island's maritime heritage, long efforts to protect shipping in and out of the rocky waters of Narragansett Bay, and the creation of transportation routes that played a major role in the state's development. Established in 1866 off Conimicut Point at the entrance to the Providence River, it became an important navigational aid for vessels en route to Providence and the first light in Narragansett Bay built offshore. The present tower, dating from 1883, is also architecturally significant as a caisson-type lighthouse and as an excellent example of nineteenth century engineering and prefabricated cast iron construction. It was conveyed to the City of Warwick from the United States Department of the Interior on September 29, 2004.
