Carl and Mary "Elizabeth" Litten raised seven sons and four daughters in Flushing, Ohio, where the siblings remembered an adventurous childhood and close bonds. After the oldest son succeeded in joining the United States Air Force, the other brothers followed. The seven brothers—John M. Litten, Robert D. Litten, Larry R. Litten, Kenneth A. Litten, Gerald L. Litten, Arthur G. Litten, and Carl S. Litten—served in the United States Air Force in careers spanning 1951 to 1989. Their service is credited in the text as a combined 132, 133, and 137 years, and the family is thanked for its service and sacrifice to the United States. The four Litten daughters, Vivian, Phyllis, Sandra, and Kathleen, did not serve in the military but took pride in their brothers' accomplishment. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted officially recognized Larry R. Litten and his family in 2020 for dedicated service to the country, and a United States Senate certificate of commendation also honored Larry Litten and his family for service in the United States Air Force.
