Taylorsville Metropark is a 1,300-acre park along the Great Miami River with wooded ravines, rock outcroppings, historic ruins, and bikeway access. Popular picnic areas include the CCC Shelter, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1936 and restored in 1989. Near the shelter north of the dam, a short walk leads to a large pile of Brassfield dolomite, an exposed rock face, stone stairs, and small caverns formed by water moving through the stone over long periods. Remains of the village of Tadmor lie 1.25 miles north along the bikeway. Tadmor was an important transportation center in Ohio history: by 1809 keelboats were poled upriver from Dayton to load and unload freight there; by 1837 the Miami and Erie Canal connected it south to the Ohio River and north to Lake Erie; in the 1830s the National Road connected it east and west; and in 1831 the Dayton and Michigan Railroad established freight and passenger service to the growing town. Residents hoped Tadmor's strategic location would bring prosperity, but repeated flooding of the Great Miami River stifled growth, and after the flood of 1913 the village dissipated. Tadmor was finally abandoned after a dam constructed by the Miami Conservancy District in 1922 to retain floodwater made the site uninhabitable. The Buckeye Trail, a 1400 mile long-distance hiking trail entirely within Ohio, passes through 49 of the state's 88 counties.
