Harrell Prairie Botanical Area, also called Harrell Prairie Hill, is a 160-acre tallgrass prairie preserve in Bienville National Forest near Forest, Mississippi. It preserves one of Mississippi’s rare remaining pieces of the Jackson Prairie Belt and is regarded as the state’s largest and least disturbed example of Jackson Prairie. Known locally as cedar fields, these prairies differ sharply from the surrounding loblolly pine woods because of unusually alkaline Maytag soils. The preserve supports prairie grasses such as little bluestem, Indiangrass, and big bluestem, along with diverse wildflowers, and it is also recognized as an example of the geophysical transformation of the Mississippi River Delta.
