Kloochman Rock is a prominent andesite outcrop in central Washington’s Cascade Range, east of Rimrock Lake in Yakima County, exposed by erosion after harder intrusive rock outlasted the surrounding material. Probably formed between the Oligocene and Pliocene during development of the Cascade arc, it was once grouped with the Fifes Peaks Formation but later mapped separately and not as a volcanic vent. Its Chinook Jargon name, meaning woman or wife, is linked to a Yakama legend of transformed figures. Near the ancient Yakama-Cowlitz Trail, the area reflects thousands of years of Indigenous travel and settlement and later became associated with William O. Douglas, who climbed it in 1913.
