The Sentinel Range Wilderness Area is a protected section of New York’s Forest Preserve in the Adirondack Park, centered on the rugged Sentinel Range between the towns of Wilmington, North Elba, and Keene. Steep slopes, cliffs, and evidence of past forest fires shape the landscape, from bare rock outcrops on Sentinel Mountain to regenerated hardwood and mixed forests across the interior. Five small ponds and 13.8 miles of foot trails add to its character, including a former ski trail now maintained for hiking. Despite easy perimeter access by highways, the rough terrain has kept the interior less heavily used than nearby state lands, while viewpoints on Sentinel, Pitchoff, and Copperas Pond remain major attractions.
