Whiteface Mountain, an isolated Adirondack High Peak in northeastern New York, is renowned for sweeping summit views, an exposed alpine top above treeline, and a pale rock and icy appearance reflected in both its English and Indigenous names. Shaped by glaciation, it has long drawn climbers, tourists, and scientists, with recorded ascents beginning in 1814 and weather research on the summit since 1937. Unlike most High Peaks, it has a developed summit reached by the Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway, trail, or tunnel and elevator. Its eastern slope also holds a major ski area that hosted the alpine events of the 1980 Winter Olympics.
