Racetrack Valley and its dry lakebed, or playa, are known for their beauty, silence, solitude, and the mystery of moving stones that leave furrows in the dried mud as a record of their journeys. The playa is 2.5 miles long from north to south and about half as wide, and the elevation at each end of the dry lakebed varies by only 1.5 inches. Furrows in the once slick playa trace the wind-blown journey of rocks across its surface. Visiting Racetrack Valley can be rewarding but arduous because the primitive road challenges vehicles and passengers alike, and walking on the Racetrack when it is wet leaves footprints that will last for a long time.
