The Mountain Hill District Consolidated School, a handsome Colonial Revival structure completed in 1930, served children in the western half of Harris County from 1930 through 1989. Designed by the Atlanta architectural firm Lockwood and Poundstone, it brought together several one- and two-room schools in one building. With central heat, indoor plumbing, and electricity, it offered students amenities unknown in most of their homes. Construction was funded primarily by the local community through a $60,000 bond issue. The school had 9 classrooms and a 436-seat auditorium for both elementary and high school students. In that auditorium, Chet Atkins, later a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and a student there during the 1930’s, perfected his distinctive guitar style. Afterward, the Mountain Hill Schoolhouse Foundation, Inc. played an instrumental role in saving the building from demolition and restoring it as a community center, and the building is owned by Harris County.
