Shorty McDonald Playground
History
8
George C. "Shorty" McDonald gave the children of Winner a park by leaving two-fifths of his estate, $8,000, to the community for its construction. He died at age 68 in Jan. 1948. Orphaned in Chicago at age 7, he drifted to the Rosebud Country in his early teens, became a ranch cook, and later built a hamburger business that operated first at White River, then Colome, and finally Winner. His advertising slogan was, "10¢ to see Shorty, your hamburger free," and in his will he said, "Give them a place to play."
