In Sac County, Iowa, John J. Wassom flew 76 missions over Europe from 1943 to 1945, while Western Union delivered telegraphs to millions of family members. Two Navajo Indians, called Code Whisperers, carried an injured soldier, Harlan Woehl, several miles for medical assistance, and their work played a pivotal role in ensuring that messages were secure. Silhouettes of the six Bachman brothers of Auburn symbolize brothers, classmates, friends, and neighbors serving in the military at any given time. Gerald McKeen, a Sac City graduate, joined the Navy to get medical training and died in the Vietnam War while helping wounded soldiers.
