Black Hawk State Park in Lake View, Iowa, occupies the shores of Black Hawk Lake and developed through state land purchases that included a former gravel quarry, a farm, and the Denison Beach tract, with support from Dr. E. E. Speaker. During the Depression, Civilian Conservation Corps veterans of Company VCCC 1776 transformed the area by cleaning the quarry, creating 13 fish-rearing ponds, planting more than 3,400 trees, and building shelters, latrines, and other park facilities. Additional New Deal crews continued the work, and the park opened by 1936. In 1991, three sections were listed on the National Register of Historic Places for their CCC association and Rustic-style design.
