Black Hawk Lake
Nature
Black Hawk Lake is a natural glacial lake in western Iowa along the eastern edge of Lake View. Covering about 957 acres, it drains through Ditch No. 57 into Indian Creek, a tributary of the North Raccoon River, and takes its name from Chief Black Hawk. Formed by glacial action rather than by a dam, it is one of the region’s notable natural features. The State of Iowa manages a state park and a wildlife management area around its shores, supporting recreation and habitat conservation. With boating, camping, fishing, and the northern end of the Sauk Rail Trail, the lake serves as a major scenic and outdoor center for the area.
