Astronauts spent much of their time on their couches, and with the seat portion of the center couch folded, two astronauts could stand at the same time. They slept in two sleeping bags mounted beneath the left and right couches, with restraints that allowed them to sleep with or without spacesuits. Food, water, clothing, waste management items, and other equipment were packed into bays along the walls. The cabin was pressurized to about 5 pounds per square inch, about the same pressure as the summit of Mount Everest, and the temperature was controlled at about 75°F. This pressurization and controlled temperature enabled astronauts to spend much of their time out of their suits, though they wore them during critical phases such as launch, entry, docking, and crew transfer.
