Heidelberg Township's Porters Fire Company was founded on May 10, 1949, by citizens who met to form the company after arrangements had already been made to purchase a used fire engine. The Porters Athletic Association provided the initial down payment of $100.00, with $150.00 remaining to be paid. During the first year, membership rose to 118 members. In August 1949, the company had developed enough to consider erecting a suitable building to house the truck and also serve as a community hall. That building served the company until the mid-1960s, when two truck bays and a meeting room were added. As the need for a tanker truck to fight rural fires became clear, a truck was purchased and later replaced with a larger one that could hold 1200 gallons. In 1976, a new fire engine was purchased with a Waterous pump rated at 750 gpm, and a 500 gallon booster tank was also purchased. The current building was built in 1983, and since then minor upgrades have been made, including blacktopping the parking lot in the 1990s, along with the purchase of many trucks and trailers.
