Georgetown was named for George Walts, from Pennsylvania, who settled here in 1807. The earliest settler was Patrick Henry Shields, a Virginian, who arrived in 1805 and became prominent in early Indiana affairs as a statesman and soldier. Sherman Minton was born here in 1890 and became an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1949 to 1956.
