Jennings County, formed in 1816, was named in honor of Jonathan Jennings, territorial delegate to Congress from 1809 to 1816, president of the Indiana Constitutional Convention in 1816, first governor of the state from 1816 to 1822, and a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1822 to 1831. It is the only Jennings County in the United States.
