Cast in France of high bronze alloy around 1725, this 10 inch mortar bore the sunburst design that was the official crest of Louis XV. It was sent to America as part of French support for the American Revolution and saw service at the Siege of Yorktown, Virginia, in October 1781, where French artillerymen successfully used it to bombard the British defences.
