After fire destroyed Wakulla County's first courthouse in 1892, George Washington Tully and Thomas McGlynn completed a new courthouse two years later using native heart pine. Standing at the center of the town plat, the wood frame building had a prominent intersecting gable roof, mitered joined hallway floorboards, wide hallways, large windows, and a cupola topped with a hand-carved mullet weathervane. From 1893-1949, it housed court activities and all constitutional officers while Wakulla County remained very rural, with livestock roaming the yard and outhouse facilities serving users. In 1948, plans called for a modern masonry courthouse on the same site, and the old building was relocated 500 feet southwest by being winched across the site on giant roller logs without sagging, cracking, or showing signs of strain. Since the masonry courthouse's dedication in 1949, the building has served the health department, library, and chamber of commerce, and in 1976 it was listed in the National Registry of Historic Places.
