Waackaack Rear Range Light, built off Keansburg, New Jersey, in 1856, helped guide vessels into Raritan Bay as the rear light in a range with Point Comfort Light. About 96 feet tall, it began as a wooden structure and was replaced in the 1860s by an iron tower, reflecting more durable lighthouse construction. In 1883, the station received a high-powered electric lamp with a glass lens to improve navigation. A later tower was exhibited by the United States Lighthouse Board at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition before erection in New Jersey. The lighthouse later inspired Keansburg’s 1917 borough seal and survived as a local landmark until it was dismantled for scrap by the end of the 1950s.
