Conover Beacon stands in Leonardo, New Jersey, as the former front light of the Chapel Hill Range, which marked the Chapel Hill Channel connecting the Ambrose and Sandy Hook channels to Raritan Bay. Range lights began guiding this route in 1856. The original front beacon, a hexagonal wooden tower built on land bought from Rulif Conover, gave the light its name, while the rear light stood on Chapel Hill. After a brief discontinuance in 1923 and restoration following protests, the original tower served until 1941, when a skeletal tower from the Waackaack Range replaced it. The light ended in 1988, but the tower remains under Middletown Township management.
