Between 1775 and 1811, thousands of pioneers traveled through here on the Wilderness Road, which followed an ancient buffalo path. An act of the legislature made it into a wagon road in 1796. From 1778 to 1783, it served as a lifeline for Gen. George Rogers Clark's army at the Falls of Ohio, Louisville. The road was abandoned in 1840.
