A 160 acre site was given to the American Baptist Home Mission Society by an act of the National Council of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation on October 29, 1881, for the purpose of educating American Indian students from all tribal nations. Bacone College, founded in Tahlequah Indian Territory on February 9, 1880, and moved to this site on June 5, 1885, was the expression of that mission. The historic grant was dedicated during a centennial celebration to the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and each of its citizens on February 9, 1986.
