In the early morning darkness on August 5, 1959, near the intersection of Skyline Boulevard and Bunker Hill Drive in Hillsborough, Officer Eugene A. Doran stopped a nineteen-year-old convicted felon who was on probation for burglary and interstate auto theft and was driving a stolen vehicle displaying stolen license plates, circumstances of which Doran was unaware. The auto thief fatally shot Doran with a stolen revolver. Through skillful investigation by the sheriff’s office, citizen cooperation, and forensic science, the killer was identified, and a manhunt involving many law enforcement agencies ensued. Within seventy-two hours, he was located in Salt Lake City, Utah, in possession of the murder weapon, arrested, and returned to San Mateo County for trial. District Attorney Keith Sorenson prosecuted the case, and the killer was convicted of first degree murder and executed at San Quentin, California State Prison on April 26, 1961. In 1969, the magnificent 280 Freeway bridge crossing San Mateo Creek Canyon east of this marker was named "Eugene A Doran Memorial Bridge."
