Born into slavery in 1856, T. Thomas Fortune became one of the most influential American journalists and newspaper publishers of the 19th and 20th centuries. A stalwart of social justice, he was remembered at his passing in 1928 by Kelly Miller, Dean of Howard University, who said, “His pen knew but one theme—the right of man.” The text also preserves the verse “Love's Divinest Power”: “Let mad ambition strive to gain The cherished wish that yields but pain; Let others seek for wealth alone, And with its cares their lives atone; But let me live my fleeting hour The slave of Love's divinest power”.
