Godley’s school system began before the railroad town itself, when the Johnson County Commissioners Court formed Godley Independent School District in July 1884. The town of Godley followed in 1886 after rancher and lumber merchant R. B. Godley donated land for a townsite and railroad right-of-way to the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. Among the earliest teachers was Dr. John I. Pearson. Godley College opened in 1899 in a three-story frame building and became Godley High School three years later. A three-story brick building opened in time for graduation in 1916. The school grew greatly in the late 1930s through rural school consolidation and aid from federal New Deal agencies. A gymnasium built in 1937 and an auditorium built in 1939 expanded the campus, and the auditorium, later used as a library, was completed with financial and labor assistance from the National Youth Administration. A new main building, finished in 1940 with Works Progress Administration funds, joined the gymnasium and auditorium into a single building and created an unusually large facility for a rural school. School buildings from Bruce, Pleasant View, and Cottonwood were moved there as part of the construction. Godley School housed all grades until 1967, when a new elementary school was built. After 1984 it became a middle school, and in 2000 it became an intermediate school. The school consists of one-story wings connecting a two-story main building, an auditorium, and a gymnasium in a modified rectangular plan, with native stone laid in a giraffe rock pattern, dark brick in a stack bond variation with alternating runners and stretchers, multi-pane windows, and Spanish Colonial-style entries.
