West of here on the Colorado, Brine Springs were used by Indians as an infirmary or health resort. During the Civil War, operations increased there to make salt for army supplies for men, cavalry horses, and mule teams, and for general table and ranch use. Brine was pumped from the spring by a horse driven in a circle that operated a lift filling troughs on a 40-foot-high scaffold. Cedar boughs placed in the troughs concentrated the brine, which filtered down into iron kettles that boiled one bushel of salt from 50 bushels of brine.
