Known from early days as the Three Notch Trail, this road is believed to have been marked with three notches by scouts sent out by General Andrew Jackson’s troops on their march to Fort Scott. Most of his troops passed this way en route to fight the Seminoles in Florida, including Col. A. P. Haynes and his detachment of Tennesseans. An old Indian trail, this route was also used by General Edmund P. Gaines and his troops from Fort Gaines to Fort Scott. It later served as a wagon road for early settlers and was one of the important pioneer roads, appearing on maps as early as 1820.
